The Butternut
Yellow and brown curling leaves were scattered on the green grass after our climb and I got dizzy looking up into the sun through the huge branches of the butternut. The green pottery glaze on the handmade stoneware crock glistened with condensation and I could almost taste the iced tea with mint that Mom was going to pour us out of the spigotted crock. She carried the oval tray loaded with stoneware tumblers out to our picnic blanket and drew us each a full glass of ecstasy! It wouldn't be summer without her minted iced tea and it wouldn't be the same without that huge tree to drink it under kept extra cold in those blue pottery tumblers.
