Country Store in Vermont
Going to the country store was a big deal. It was something we always did on our Vermont family vacations. There was penny candy there and wonderful looking desserts on pedestal cake stands. I loved to get rock candy on sticks! My older brothers Tom, Pat, and James liked to fish around in the handmade stoneware crock for the biggest sour pickles they could find. That was their idea of a treat – yuck! The little ones - as we called Maureen, Kate, Laura and Joe – loved the paper strips with candy "pills" on them so they could play doctor and pharmacist. The stoneware pie pans with every imaginable variety of pie were always where Matt was drawn. He could never decide on which piece he wanted though! Theresa and Meg always studied the stoneware pottery figurines hoping Mom would break down and buy them one of those. They'd finally end up at the penny candy case and take their sweet time choosing. Finally Dad would ask the owner to cut us a huge hunk of Vermont cheddar from the big cheese plate under the glass dome. We'd have that with apple pie after dinner – a treat almost as wonderful as going to the country store in Vermont!
