Gone in a Flash

The turkey was ordered weeks ahead - it was a thirty pounder that barely fit into the oven. Preparations began a few days ahead of time. Pies were baked - pumpkin and apple. The shopping was done. Carts were loaded with vegetables and potatoes - both white and sweet. The cranberry sauce, black olives, celery, cream cheese, stuffing ingredients were all crossed off the list. We got out the tatted table cloth and put it on the dining room table after three leaves were added and all of the extra chairs were rounded up. The good silver was polished and sorted, and then the table was set with cloth napkins and the beautiful gold rimmed water glasses and the handmade blue agate dinnerware. I always loved climbing up into the cabinet in the kitchen where the huge stoneware platter and covered casserole dishes that matched were kept. It was oval and we used it on holidays for turkey or on special occasions as a breakfast tray for Mom. By the time Gram and Uncle Ed arrived at around two o'clock in the afternoon, the house was filled with the smells of Thanksgiving dinner and all of us were starving. It seemed like an eternity until Mom would finally let us know that the bird was done and that Dad would pull it out of the oven and put it on that large stoneware platter and carry it to the head of the table to begin his slow, methodical carving process. Our mouths watered as we watched. Then finally the food was passed and the feasting began! How was it that what took days to prepare was over in what seemed like half an hour?
